Notes for Robert Riter HOOPES

Robert Riter Hoopes, 74, passed away on Tuesday, July 8, 2014 with his family at his side.

Rob was born in Wilmington, the son of Frank M. Hoopes, Sr. and Edna Sossaman Hoopes. He attended Wilmington Friends School, Duke University and the Kornberg School of Dentistry at Temple University. He was honored to have served as a Captain in the United States Air Force.

Rob was fortunate to be engaged in a profession that he loved. Every day spent in his dental office was a pleasure; he cared deeply about his patients and his work colleagues. He worked hard to keep abreast of best practices in his profession. He was elected to the American College of Dentists and the International College of Dentists. He was a member of the Delaware State Board of Examiners and the Delaware State Dental Society serving as its President in 1977-78. He was a staff member at Christiana Hospital and a member of its Credentials Committee. He was a long time member of the Wilmington Rotary Club, Wilmington Country Club, and Westminster Presbyterian Church.

Throughout his life, Rob traveled widely and especially enjoyed taking each of his grandchildren on an adventurous trip for their tenth birthdays -- to Alaska, the Greek Isles, the Galapagos, and the Arctic Circle.

Most of all, Rob enjoyed spending time with his wife and family in Wilmington, Stone Harbor, New Jersey and Key West, Florida. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Judith Heckroth Hoopes, his daughter Stephanie Hoopes Halpin, his son Robert R. Hoopes, Jr (Hilary), five grandchildren, James Marshall and Elizabeth Riter Halpin, Penelope Colton, Riter Barnes, and Charlotte Payne Hoopes, a brother Frank M. Hoopes, Jr. (Anne), nieces Laura Nilsen (Keith), Ashley Wilks (David) and nephews Josh Trager (Sue) and Greg Trager (Sarah) and sister-in-law Phyllis Heckroth Trager.

Interment at Lower Brandywine Cemetery will be private.

A Memorial Service will be held at Westminster Presbyterian Church on Monday July 14, 2014 at 3:00 pm. Afterwards, the family will host an Open House at their home from 4:00 to 6:00 pm.

The family would like to express its deep appreciation to Dr. Donald Hayes and Dr. Michael Guarino, as well as the excellent staffs of the Helen F. Graham Cancer Center and Stonegates Health Center.

If you would like to remember Rob, the family suggests a contribution to the Frank M. Hoopes Lecture Fund c/o the Delaware Community Foundation, Box 1636, Wilmington, DE 19899
