Notes for Walter Leroy COATES

Funeral services for Walter Leroy Coates will be held 10 a.m. Thursday, April 21, 2005 in the chapel of Hixson Brothers Funeral Home, Alexandria with Rev. Jim Spencer and Reverend David Boothe officiating. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Memorial Park, Pineville.

Visitation will be from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. today, Wednesday, April 20, 2005 and from 8 a.m. until time of service Thursday at Hixson Brothers, Alexandria.

Mr. Coates, 84, of Alexandria, passed away Monday, April 18, 2005.

Mr. Coates joined Rapides Bank in 1962 in the installment loan department and was named manger of the automobile department in 1966. He retired from the bank in 1985 as vice president of commercial lending. He graduated from Louisiana College with a B.A. in business administration and accounting. Mr. Coates was past president of the Central Louisiana Chapter of the American Institute of Banking, of the Alexandria Youth Baseball Association and the Optimist Club, where he was named Optimist of the Year for 1955-56 and 1978-79. He served as counselor of the Junior Achievement program of Alexandria and was a veteran of World War II and the Korean Conflict.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruby Mizell Coates.

Survivors include his son, Norman Coates and wife, Bobbi of Dallas; his daughter, Janelle Allen and husband, Bill of Alexandria; his sister, Martha Daigre and husband, Parke of Lancaster, Pa.; his grandchildren, Todd Coates, Jarred Coates, Billy Allen, Debbie Allen Beck, Ginger Allen Spencer and Robin Allen and thirteen great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Billy Allen, Todd Coates, Jarred Coates, Bobby Smith, Rick Beck and Dr. Peter Couvillion.

Honorary pallbearers will be the Optimist Club of Alexandria.
