Notes for James Spears DAVIS

Logan Democrat Sentinel, Thursday, October 15, 1931- Logan, OH:

James Spears Davis, the subject of this brief sketch, was born near Pittsburgh in Allegheny County, PA. on January 25, 1839. Departed this life at his home in Washington Township, Hocking County, Ohio, on Sept. 25, 1931 at the age of 92 years and 8 months.
In his early manhood he worked on the farm and in the mine until his enlistment in that terrible struggle, the Civil War. He was a member of Company K, 63 Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry. While thus serving his country, he fought in some of the hardest battles of the war, such as Gettysburg in which 4,800 men were killed. He was a prisoner in three Confederate prisons. On August 10, 1864, he was honorably discharged at a camp near Petersburg, VA. At the close of the war, Mr. Davis came to Vinton County, OH and was married to Mary Blackston [sp, Blackstone].
They were blessed with four children, namely: James Cain of Carroll; Lizzie Savey of Cincinnati; Whitmore and Joseph Davis of Orland. Mr. Davis spent more than 78 years of his life in Washington township, where his gentle and kind disposition made for him a host of friends among young and old.
He had a generous nature and was never too busy to lend a hand to anyone in need. He had a pleasant view of life and endeavored to scatter sunshine among his many friends and neighbors. Mr. Davis was a good husband, a kind and loving father, and a splendid neighbor and friend.
He is survived by his wife and four children mentioned above, nine grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, and many other relatives and friends.
Though he is dead his noble life, Still lives among us here; And will live on, and on for years; To scatter doubt and fear.
Yes, he is gone, but not for long; Perhaps he's very near; And as we journey on each day; We'll think of him as here.
With deep appreciation we desire to thank our friends for their many acts of sympathy and kindness to us in our great bereavement.

Mrs. Mary Davis and children.
