Notes for Milford Jackson BRINTON

Milford J. (Mel) Brinton, age 90, of Talleyville, DE, passed away on January 11, 2007, at Shipley Manor.

Mr. Brinton was born on May 26, 1916, in Wilmington, DE, to the late Ralph Jackson Brinton, and Mary Anna Long. He was raised on East 23rd St. and graduated from Wilmington High School. He was an Electrical Inspector at the Pennsylvania Railroad Wilmington Shops from 1936- 1966. Mel had a great talent for organization and public service, providing years of leadership in the Wilmington area and national organizations as a volunteer. He operated industrial softball leagues and teams and managed Brandywine AC and was a leader in the Church Athletic League. Mr. Brinton was a cofounder and leader in the Keystone Trails Association of PA and the Brandywine Valley Outing Club, and served on the Board of Directors of the Appalachian Trail Conference. Mel was a long time Wilmington area Scoutmaster, first of Troop 67 (Fairfax), then Troop 528 (Grace Episcopal Church). He earned the Silver Beaver Award for leadership in the Delmarva Council, Boy Scouts of America. His troops maintained a section of the Appalachian Trail. He nurtured many Eagle Scouts, including 16 in 1972. He was a past president and genealogist in the Brinton Family Association of West Chester, PA, and was well known among Chadds Ford area historians. Mel also served on the Brandywine Battlefield Commission Board and was a member of the S.A.R.

Mr. Brinton was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Elizabeth Hintz Brinton; and brother, Ralph Harvey Brinton. He is survived by his sons, Allan J. Brinton, Sr., and his wife, Jane, of Newark, DE, and Milford Jackson Brinton, Jr., and his wife Oleta, of Tyler, TX; 2 grandchildren, Christina Brinton Found, and her husband, Matt, of Claymont, DE, and Allan J. Brinton, Jr., of Talleyville, DE; and his brother- in- law, John C. Hintz, of Talleyville, DE.

The family will receive friends on Sunday, January 21, from 6-8 pm, in the MCCRERY MEMORIAL FUNERAL HOME, 3924 Concord Pike, Talleyville, DE. The funeral service will be held on Monday, January 22, at 2 pm, in Grace Episcopal Church, 4906 Concord Pike, Wilmington, DE.
