Deceased Name: Harvard C. Wood Jr., 96, (obit)
of White Horse Village, Edgmont, the retired owner of H.C. Wood Memorials of Upper Darby, died May 14 at home.
Born in Philadelphia, he was a 1924 graduate of Lansdowne High School. In 1928, he received a degree in civil engineering from the University of Pennsylvania, Towne Scientific School, now the School of Engineering and Applied Science. He was a member of Delta Tau Delta and during his junior and senior years was a member of the staff of the student publication, the PA Triangle.
Mr. Wood was the owner of H.C. Wood Memorials in the Fernwood section of Upper Darby. He was the third generation involved in the family business that was started in 1855 by his grandfather, Aaron Charles Wood. The business is still family- owned and operated by the fourth and fifth generations.
During World War II, the monument company's showroom was cleared for the blasting equipment used for the Hajoka Westinghouse and Kellet Aircraft Corp. During this time, people from all walks of life, trades and skills worked in their spare time to clean castings for ship, airplanes and small turbines. They worked on the whole fuselage of a plane.
Mr. Wood was a member of All Saints Episcopal Church in Wynnewood.
He was a member of the former Darby-Lansdowne Rotary Club from 1931-1975, having served on the board of directors, as secretary and president. He was a member of the Ardmore Rotary club.
Mr. Wood was past president of the American Institute of Commemorative Art. He was a member of the Philadelphia Country Club and a former member of the Seaview Country Club in New Jersey and the University Club of the University of Pennsylvania.
He was also a member of the Sons of the Revolution and the Sons of the American Revolution.
A world traveler who visited 88 countries, he became a noted lecturer on travel. He was a longtime member of the Lansdowne Lodge No. 711 F&AM.
He was the widower of Dorothea Hutchinson Wood, who died in 1991, after 62 year of marriage. His son, John H. Wood, who died in 1993 and a grandson who died in 1985, also predeceased him.
Survivors: Daughter, MaryEmma Wilson of Southern Pines, N.C. son, Harvard C. Wood III of Wayne eight grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren.
