Notes for Frances Paul MILLS

FRANCES PAUL SMITH, 85, a homemaker, mother and hospital volunteer, died Tuesday at her home in Gladwyne.
Mrs. Smith was the daughter of Ellen Drexel Mills and Paul Denckla Mills and was a great-granddaughter of Anthony J. Drexel, founder of Drexel University.
Mrs. Smith was a lover of animals and founded the Dorchester County SPCA in Summerville, S.C., where she had a winter residence.
During World War II, Mrs. Smith was active in the Navy League of Philadelphia. She was a volunteer at the Valley Forge Army Hospital, and organized recreational activities for soldiers who were blind or burn victims.
She was the widow of Edward B. Smith Jr., a former investment banker.
Survivors: three sons, Paul Mills Ingersoll, Henry McKean Ingersoll and David S.J. Smith; a daughter, Ellen Frances Chandlee; 11 grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.
Services: 2 p.m. today, Chapel of Old St. David's Episcopal Church, Wayne; burial, the church's cemetery.
