Notes for Anne Exton STONE
Anne Exton Scarlett, 95, of Kennett Square, passed away on Thursday, August 11, 2011.
Born on March 10, 1916, in Coatesville, Pa., Anne was the daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Charles Stone. She was educated at the George School, Bradford Junior College, and the Philadelphia Art Institute.
She was a talented artist and extended her artistic talents to gardening and flower-arranging. She won numerous flower show awards both in Kennett Square and at the Philadelphia Flower Show. She was a longtime member of the Spade and Trowel Garden Club. In 1994, she was given the Myrrl R. Overdorff Community Action Award at the 64th annual convention of the Garden Club Federation of Pennsylvania. This award was based on her many years of dedicated efforts on behalf of the Kennett Beautification Committee, the Brandywine Conservancy, and the Brandywine River Museum.
For many years, she was a volunteer at the Brandywine River Museum. Anne and Libby Dean together created a group of special Christmas tree decorations they called "critters." These were made entirely of objects found in nature - leaves, pine cones, twigs, nuts, seed pods, teasel and milkweed. Annually, they would decorate the huge Christmas tree at the museum, and thousands of people visited to see the tree. In 1992 alone, more than 60,000 visitors came to view the tree.
In 1975, Anne and Libby Dean collaborated on a book entitled "Critters, Angels, and Stars," which contained the history of the critters along with instructions for finding the materials and then making them. Anne did the illustrations for the book. In 1997, she also did the illustrations for a "Brandywine Trees," with text by Elizabeth N. du Pont. Proceeds from these books helped support the Brandywine Conservancy.
In 1984, Anne and Libby Dean were invited to bring a group of museum volunteers to Washington, D.C., to decorate the official White House Christmas tree with their critters. This project was widely reported in the national press, including articles in the Washington Post and U. S. News and World Report.
On September 10, 1938, Anne was married to William J. Scarlett of Kennett Square. They made their home in Kennett Square, but spent summers in Ocean City, N.J. and Nosara, Costa Rica, where they were active in social and civic affairs. They also spent time at their house on Andros Island in the Bahamas.
Anne was preceded in death by her husband of 67 years in 2005 and a daughter, Elizabeth, and a sister, Betty Gregory. She is survived by two daughters, Joan Scarlett Winebrenner and her husband Wirt of Lewisburg, WV, and Elsie Scarlett Gerard of Genval, Belgium; one son, George B. Scarlett II and his wife, Dorothy, of Kennett Square; five grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren; a brother, Dr. Charles Stone of Maine, and a sister, Mary Brodish of North Carolina.
A private graveside service for family will be followed by a memorial service in September at a time and place to be announced at a later date.
