Notes for William Joseph SCARLETT

William J. Scarlett
Age 90 of Kennett Square, PA passed away on Sunday, September 25, 2005.
Born November 23, 1914 in Kennett Square, Mr. Scarlett was the son of State Senator George B. Scarlett and Elsie Gawthrop Scarlett. He was educated in the Kennett Square schools, and graduated from The George School, Pennsylvania State University, and the University of Pennsylvania Law School. He studied for a year at Pembroke College in Oxford, England. Mr. Scarlett was a founding partner of the law firm of Larmore & Scarlett of Kennett Square, now Larmore, Scarlett, Myers and Temple. He retired from active practice in 1975 and was of counsel to the firm until his death. He was a member of the Chester County Bar Association, of which he was a past president, the Pennsylvania Superior Court, and U.S. Supreme Court bars. He was a longtime member of the board of directors of the National Bank & Trust Company of Kennett Square. Active in many civic and charitable organizations, Mr. Scarlett was a co-founder of the Kennett Community Chest and co-founder of the Red Clay Valley Association, of which he was a director. He was a member of the Chester County Planning Commission and chairman of that commission in 1960. He was also a member and past president of the Kennett Lions Club. In addition to his professional and civic activities, Mr. Scarlett was a keen amateur architect, designing several of the residences he and his wife happily occupied in Kennett Square, Ocean City, NJ, and Nosara, Costa Rica. In recent years, Mr. and Mrs. Scarlett spent several months each year in their beloved home overlooking the Pacific outside Nosara.
On September 10, 1938, Mr. Scarlett married Anne Exton Stone of Coatesville, who survives him. He is also survived by 2 daughters, Joan Scarlett Winebrenner and her husband, Wirt, of Lewisburg, WV and Elsie Scarlett Gerard of Genval, Belgium and her husband, Pierre; and 1 son, George B. Scarlett II and his wife, Dorothy, of Kennett Square. He is survived as well by 5 grandchildren; and 7 great grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 2 pm on Thursday, September 29, 2005, at Crosslands in Kennett Square. A private burial ceremony at graveside will follow.
