Notes for Mary MERCER

Mary Mercer Carpenter passed away peacefully at her home in Skowhegan, ME on January 15, 2014. Mary was born in Paoli, Pennsylvania but lived most of her early life in the Newark, Delaware area with her mother and seven siblings. Mary attended Newark High School, was employed by Chrysler Corporation for a brief period and later retired after fifteen years with the E.I. DuPont Company at the Louveirs location. Mary was the widow of James H. Carpenter of Centerville, Delaware. They resided in the home Jim built in Centerville for most of their married life. They were long-time members of Lower Brandywine Presbyterian Church. Mary and Jim loved Lower Brandywine, having served on various committees as well as singing in the choir. They also volunteered their time for Meals-On-Wheels and other worthwhile organizations. Mary was a talented seamstress, gardener, and enjoyed playing golf with her husband. She was also an avid dog lover and owned several Labrador retrievers.

She is survived by her three daughters, Mary Lou and husband Doug Gamsby of Sunapee, NH, Georgia and husband Michael Farley of Parrish, FL, and Elizabeth King and her partner Chip Button of Madison, ME. She is also survived by fifteen grandchildren, Jeffrey States, Eric States, Tracey States, Stacey Kennedy, Sandy McClain, Brandt Farley, Lindsey States, Megan Brown, Andrew States, Michael B. Farley, Gwynne Berry, Amanda Leslie, Randall Farley, Joseph States and Rachael States, along with nineteen great-grandchildren, one great-great granddaughter, numerous nieces, nephews, and friends. Mary will be sadly missed but fondly remembered and loved by family and friends.

Services will be held on Friday, May 23rd, 2014 at 1pm at Lower Brandywine Presbyterian Church, 101 Old Kennett Road, Centerville, DE. Reception to be held at the Hockessin Memorial Hall, Lancaster Pike, Hockessin, DE., after the service and interment.
