Notes for John Cornelius DESMOND

John Desmond, 89 of Wilmington, DE, passed away on Saturday, August 2, 2008 at Christiana Hospital with loved ones by his side.

John was born in Landenberg, PA on June 30, 1919, son of the late Cornelius and Mary (Conway) Desmond. He was a graduate of Kennett High School, class of 1938. A veteran of the United States Army, he served our country during WWII and was stationed for 2 years in Iran, where he served as a telegraph operator. He received several medals during his service and after his honorable discharge, John returned to his career with the Pennsylvania Railroad. He worked as a locomotive fireman and was quickly promoted to locomotive engineer, having continued his service with Penn Central, Conrail and Amtrak. John retired in December of 1985 after 45 years of dedicated service. He enjoyed gardening, playing cards with his sons and spending time with his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. His greatest joy was to make us laugh, and his family will mourn the loss of his love, friendship and sense of humor.

His wife of 58 years, Marie (Lamborn) Desmond, passed away on April 2, 2006. John was also predeceased by his son, Andrew; his son-in-law, John Craig; his brother, Andrew; and his sister, Mary Hood. John is survived by his sons, Jim and his wife, Mary Beth, Jack and his wife, Berta, Paul and his wife, Debbie and Bob and his wife, Debbie; his daughters, Rosie Craig and Jane Glassing; his sister, Kitty Hutson; 17 grandchildren; and 9 great grandchildren.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. John the Beloved Church, 907 Milltown Rd., Wilmington on Thursday, August 7 at 10am. Interment will follow in All Saints Cemetery. Family and friends may visit at the DOHERTY FUNERAL HOME, 3200 Limestone Rd., Pike Creek on Wednesday, August 6 from 6-8pm.
