Martha Atkinson Heartwell, 74, of Colonial Heights, died Thursday, Oct. 23, 3003, at the Colonial Heights Health Care. She was a daughter of the late Meade Randolph and Grace Charlton Atkinson.
Mrs. Heartwell was a retired school teacher for the city of Colonial Heights where she taught for over 40 years. She was a member of the Colonial Heights Presbyterian Church, the Church Circle, the Colonial Heights Federated Woman's Club, the Colonial Heights Association of Retired Teachers and the D.A.R.
She is survived by her husband, Richard Phillip Heartwell Sr.; two sons, Thomas Meade Hartwell and Richard Phillip Heartwell Jr. and wife, Susan, all of Colonial Heights; a daughter, Elizabeth Heartwell Belcher and husband, Jim, of Chester; grandsons, Matthew Phillip Heartwell, Stephen Nicholas Belcher, Timothy Meade Heartwell and James Corbin Belcher; a sister, Sarah Grace McMillin of Sandbridge; and two brothers, Meade Randolph Atkinson Jr. of Mocksville, N.C., and John Pryor Atkinson of Fredericksburg.
A memorial service will be held at 7 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 26, 2003, in Colonial Heights Presbyterian Church. Dr. Donald R. Steele and Dr. Kathleen D. Steele will officiate. The family will receive friends following the memorial service until 9 p.m. at the church. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Oct. 27, 2003, in Concord Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Rawlings, Va. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Martha A. Heartwell Scholarship Fund, 907 Williamsburg Road, Colonial Heights, VA 23834.
