Notes for Robert L. HOLMES

Robert L. Holmes, 79, of Oxford, passed away at his home on Monday, Aug. 2, 2010, after a lengthy illness.
He was the beloved husband of Ruth Praria Holmes with whom he celebrated 50 years of marriage.
Born in Utica, N.Y., he was the son of the late Robert P. and Mildred B. Lukens Holmes.
Robert has lived in Oxford for 54 years but spent all his childhood summers in Oxford.
He was a decorated Korean War veteran and was wounded in action. He received the National Defense Service Metal, the Korean Service Medal, the UN Service Ribbon and was a platoon leader.
He was a school teacher in the Oxford Area School District for 32 years before he retired in 1990. He was also a farmer and raised sheep for about 35 years.
He was a member of the Southern Chester County Historical Society, past member of the Upper Oxford planning commission, member of the Boy Scouts of America, a 4H leader and a supporter of the Old Octorara Shrine Church.
In addition to his wife, Robert is survived by his children, Samuel A., husband of Annemarie Holmes of Scottsdale, Ariz., Robert P. Holmes of Oxford, Sarah, wife of Ronald K. Mullins of Oxford, Helen M., wife of Jeffrey J. Miller of Saraland, Ala. and Jesse B. Holmes of Alexandria, Va.; seven grandchildren; a sister, Martha, wife of James Hooper of Escanaba, Mich.; and a brother, William, husband of Virginia Holmes of Wetumpka, Ala.
He was preceded in death by a brother, John Holmes.
Relatives and friends are invited to his memorial service at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 5, at the Union Presbyterian Church, 5637 Street Road, Kirkwood. Interment will be private at the convenience of the family.
In lieu of flowers donations in his memory should be made to the Boy Scouts of America Troop #44 of Oxford, PA or your local troop.
