Notes for Waldo Emerson NELSON

Philadelphia Daily News (PA) - Friday, March 7, 1997
Deceased Name: WALDO E. NELSON, 98, RENOWNED PEDIATRICIAN
A memorial service will be held tomorrow for Waldo E. Nelson, an internationally renowned pediatrician responsible for transforming St. Christopher's Hospital for Children into a world-class care and research center. He was 98 when he died on March 2 following a stroke at his Gladwyne home.
Among his many accomplishments, Nelson expanded the pediatrics department at Temple University Hospital during his 24-year tenure as chairman.
For 50 years, he edited the landmark book, "Textbook of Pediatrics," known by medical students as the bible of pediatrics.
Nelson continued to work well into his 80s and attended meetings and made speeches into his mid-90s. Born and raised in Ohio, Nelson graduated from Wittenberg College and the University of Cincinnati School of Medicine.
He became medical director of St. Christopher's Hospital for Children in 1947.
Under his leadership, the hospital changed from a 100-bed care center attended by visiting staff to a 150-bed facility providing a higher level of care with a paid staff of researchers, educators and clinicians.
"Physicians throughout the world know of St. Christopher's Hospital for Children because of Dr. Nelson," said Calvin Bland, the hospital's president and CEO.
Nelson stepped down from his leadership roles at Temple and St. Christopher's in 1964, but continued to teach at Temple and the former Medical College of Pennsylvania School of Medicine.
He is survived by two daughters, Jane N. Beatty and Ann W. Behrman; a son, William H., eight grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.
The service will be tomorrow at 2:30 p.m. at Presbyterian Church of the Covenant, Montgomery and Bryn Mawr avenues, Bala Cynwyd. Burial will be private.
