Harriet Alexander Wetherill, 73, a horsewoman who was active in charitable and political affairs, died Saturday at her farm in Plymouth Meeting.
Mrs. Wetherill, the first woman elected to the Plymouth Township Board of Commissioners, was active on environmental issues and was a leader in pushing the township to adopting its first comprehensive open-space plan.
A Republican committeewoman from the 1950s until her death, she went door to door in her district to support local candidates and to get out the vote for Presidents Eisenhower, Nixon, Reagan and Bush.
An accomplished horsewoman, she took part in fox hunts for many years. She also owned several three-day-event and steeplechase horses, one of which, Full Stop, won the Grand National Point to Point race in Maryland. Mrs. Wetherill was named Horsewoman of the Year in 1993 by the Pennsylvania Horse Show Association.
Mrs. Wetherill combined her love of riding with charitable work in serving for 31 years as the chairwoman of the St. Christopher's Hospital for Children Horse Show. Under her leadership, the one-day show became an international five-day event. In 1984, the hospital honored her with its Sharing and Caring award.
Mrs. Wetherill was a breeder of Norwich terriers, and enjoyed skiing and sailing.
She is survived by her husband of more than 52 years, Elkins Wetherill; sons, Elkins Jr. and Stephen H.; a daughter, Alexandra Wetherill Gerry; seven grandchildren, and a brother.
A memorial service will be held at 3:30 p.m. tomorrow at St. Thomas Church of Whitemarsh, Church Road and Bethlehem Pike, Fort Washington.
