Miami Herald, The (FL) - September 25, 1997
Deceased Name: ROBERT DURFEY, RETIRED COAST GUARD REAR ADMIRAL
Robert Walker Durfey, a retired Coast Guard rear admiral and decorated war veteran, has died following a stroke. The Weston resident was 72.
''He was a humble man and most gracious,'' said his son, Bob Durfey Jr. of Corpus Christi, Texas.
Durfey, who died Sept. 17, was awarded three Bronze Star medals for his service during the Vietnam War.
On Monday, the day of his funeral service, Coast Guard stations around the country flew their flags at half-staff, Bob Durfey said.
Born in Oak Park, Ill., Durfey spent summers at the family home in Leesburg, Va.
After graduating from high school in Oak Park, he spent two years at Purdue University before being accepted in the Coast Guard Academy in New London, Conn., where he received his bachelor's degree in 1948.
While an instructor at the academy, he met his future wife, a schoolteacher he met at a bank. They married Oct. 22, 1955.
During his years with the Coast Guard, Durfey was stationed all over the country, from Washington, D.C., to San Francisco.
He received an honorary degree from George Washington University in 1968.
In 1976, he was transferred to the Seventh Coast Guard District in Miami, where he was promoted to rear admiral.
The Durfeys remained in Miami, but moved to Weston after Hurricane Andrew.
In retirement, he enjoyed taking trips with his wife to see their grandchildren.
In addition to his son, Durfey is survived by his wife, Sally; daughters Margaret Smith of Seattle and Rebecca Mancini of Rochester, N.Y.; brother George Durfey of Leesburg, Va.; and six grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at Holy Sacrament Episcopal Church in Hollywood. Boyd Family Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Durfey will be buried with full military honors at Arlington National Cemetery outside Washington, D.C.
