82, of Ligonier and Boca Grande, FL, died early Sunday morning, April 26, 2009 at his home in Ligonier. He was born September 4, 1926 in Raleigh, NC, the only child of Livingston L. and Kate Page Biddle II. Mr. Biddle was reared in Pinehurst, NC and later in Warrenton, VA. He joined the U.S. Marines in 1944 and served as an MP in Pearl Harbor through the end of World War II. After the military he graduated from the University of Virginia in 1950. He married his beloved Elizabeth "Betsy" Elwell Collin in 1953 and moved from Sewickley to Ligonier where they resided until 2005. In 2005 they took up residence in Boca Grande, FL. Toby began his professional career as a salesman at Westinghouse Air Brake before becoming a stock broker, first with Singer, Dean & Scribner, then Bache & Co and Reynolds & Co. before starting his own firm specializing in stock options, Biddle & Co. That firm was acquired in 1976 by Parker/Hunter Inc. where Toby became Executive Vice President, retiring in 1987. After retirement he devoted his considerable talents to fundraising for the Episcopal Diocese of Pittsburgh and consulting as a board member for the Westmoreland Museum of American Art , the Bidwell Training Center, the Ligonier Valley YMCA, the Valley School of Ligonier, and as president of the Rolling Rock Club. As an active member of St. Michael's of the Valley Church in Rector, he was a senior member on the Vestry of the church in addition to having been a lay reader for many years. He will be fondly remembered for his enormous good humor and infectious laugh, his kindness and his warmth. He is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Elizabeth "Betsy" C. Biddle, a daughter, Page (Joel) Biddle Cook of Carrabasset Valley, ME, two sons, Nick Biddle of Bend, OR and Collin (Ann) Biddle of Brooklyn, NY, seven grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Friends will be received Wednesday from 2-4 and 6-8PM at the J. PAUL MCCRACKEN FUNERAL CHAPEL AND CREMATORY, INC., 144 East Main Street, Ligonier. Toby's life will be celebrated Thursday at 11:00AM at St. Michael's of the Valley Church with his pastor, the Rev. Dr. James B. Simons officiating. Interment will follow in St. Michael's Cemetery. Friends will also be received in the Parish House following the interment. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Toby's memory to St. Michael's of the Valley Church, P.O. Box 336, Ligonier, PA 15658.
