Notes for Marguerite S. ROBERTS

Marguerite Roberts Spillman, an artist formerly of Wayne, died at the Foulkeways retirement community in Gwynedd on June 8, four days before her 104th birthday.
Mrs. Spillman grew up on a dairy farm in Morrisville and attributed her longevity to a nutritional diet and good living on the farm, her son Richard said. She graduated from Westtown School, the Philadelphia Museum School of Industrial Art, and the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. She illustrated brochures for the Dairy Council in Philadelphia for two years before marrying Arnold Spillman in 1931.
While raising their three children, she volunteered with the Junior League and the Wayne Women's Exchange. She and her husband were active members of Wayne Presbyterian Church and St. Davids Golf Club. Mrs. Spillman also continued painting. She took watercolor classes with Chester County artist Pearl Slobodian and exhibited her rural landscapes in Slobodian's student shows and local galleries.
In 1979, she and her husband moved to Foulkeways. They had cared for elderly parents, their son said, and didn't want to be a burden to their children. Arnold Spillman died in 1980.
Foulkeways gave Mrs. Spillman a second life, her son said. She played croquet and was a member of the lobby- art committee. In 1990, she married another resident, C. Frederick Wyttenbach. They traveled extensively until his death in 1998.
At 95, she took art lessons at Foulkeways and learned to use pastels. She provided drawings for Foulkeways' monthly bulletin and did landscapes in pastels based on photos of Oregon, where her son James lived.
In addition to her sons, Mrs. Spillman is survived by a daughter, Barbara Mentzer; five grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
A life celebration was held last Thursday at Foulkeways.
Memorial donations may be made to Westtown School, 975 Westtown Rd., Westtown, Pa. 19395.
