Notes for Grace Estelle NIEWEG

Grace Nieweg Cope, 103, of Lincoln University, passed away peacefully on Thursday, Jan. 15, 2009, at Ware Presbyterian Village in Oxford.
Born on Sept 25, 1905, in Elkdale, she was the daughter of John Bernard Wilson Nieweg and Barbara Hindman Nieweg.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Phillip D. Cope; her son, Phillip D. Cope Jr.; and her sister, Pearl N. Williamson.
Grace is survived by her daughter, Barbara Cope Lesley, and son-in-law, S. Joseph Lesley, of Smyrna, Del.; three grandsons, Matthew Phillip Lesley and wife, Amy, of Wilmington, Del., Joseph Allen Lesley and wife, Kimberly, of Palo Alto, Calif., and John Brubaker Lesley and wife, Katherine, of Wilmington, Del.; two great-grandchildren, Jacob Phillip and Ava Grace Lesley; and numerous grandnieces and grandnephews.
Grace graduated from Oxford High School in 1923.
She married Phillip Darlington Cope on Nov. 28, 1925, and lived for 83 years in Lincoln University.
A lifelong homemaker, she was a loving mother and grandmother who enjoyed music, reading, gardening, photography and travel.
At the age of 70, thanks to her friendship with Margo Porck, owner of Travelgroups Inc., Grace began her worldwide travel adventures. From 1975 to 2002 she explored the four corners of the globe, visiting more than 50 countries.
A self-taught artist, she enjoyed painting more than 60 individual Christmas cards each year for over 30 years.
She was a member of the Lincoln Bridge Club, the Oxford Research Club, the Green Thumb Garden Club and the Oxford High School Emeritus Organization, of which she was the oldest member.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, Jan. 19, at the Edward L. Collins Funeral Home Inc., 86 Pine St., Oxford, where friends may call from 10 to 11 a.m.
Interment will be in New London Presbyterian Church Cemetery.
