Notes for Orville HORWITZ

Orville Horwitz, 93, of Bryn Mawr, a retired cardiologist and professor emeritus at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, died of peritonitis Tuesday at Mariners Hospital in Tavernier, Fla.
He was a resident of Society Hill and Strafford before moving to Bryn Mawr four years ago.
In more than 50 years as a physician, Dr. Horwitz worked as a researcher, teacher, author and administrator.
He established the Foundation for Vascular-Hypertension Research, taught at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, and wrote scores of books and articles about cardiac and vascular diseases.
A 1932 graduate of Harvard University, he earned a medical degree from Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in 1938. He interned at Pennsylvania Hospital, also serving as chief resident and a fellow in cardiology at the facility.
In 1941, he joined the faculty of the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine and later became a professor of medicine and pharmacology.
Dr. Horwitz joined the Navy in 1942. He was based at Midway Island during World War II and served as a flight surgeon, administering care to injured pilots. When he returned from the war, Dr. Horwitz began a private practice and worked on the staff at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, where he was the senior ward physician and led the facility's vascular clinic. In 1946, he began working as a consultant to NASA. He established the research foundation in 1971.
Dr. Horwitz was named professor emeritus in 1985 and retired from private practice about four years ago.
He served in leadership positions with groups including the American Heart Association and was honored in 1988 by the Pennsylvania Medical Society for practicing medicine for more than 50 years.
Dr. Horwitz had been married to Nataline Dulles Horwitz since 1934.
In addition to his wife, Dr. Horwitz is survived by daughter Marian Newhall Parmenter; sons George Dulles and Jonathan; and four grandchildren.
A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Feb. 7 at Church of the Redeemer, 250 Pennswood Rd., Bryn Mawr. Burial is private.
