David Willard Pennock Jewitt, 80, died Oct. 10 at his home at Crosslands in Kennett Square, Pa. Born in Cleveland, he was a longtime resident of Southport and Fairfield before moving to Pennsylvania three years ago. He served as a lieutenant in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Amherst College in 1943 and held a Harvard fellowship the following year. In 1980, he received an honorary LLD from Fairfield University. He was a banker for 39 years. He worked at Irving Trust Co., New York City, from 1947 to 1951; Chemical Bank, New York City, from 1951 to 1959; and Connecticut National Bank, Bridgeport, from 1959 to 1986 where he was executive vice president from 1977 to 1986. He was trustee emeritus of the American Seamen's Friend Society, New York City; Gaylord Hospital, Wallingford; and the Mystic Seaport Museum. He was past president of the Oaklawn Cemetery Association and was a trustee of Fairfield University, serving as chairman of its board from 1972 to 1978. He was a member of the Connecticut Society of Colonial Wars, the National Beagle Club and the Theodore Gordon Flyfishers. His clubs included Army and Navy, Washington; Squadron A Association, New York City; Royal Bermuda Yacht, Royal Swedish Yacht and Flyfishers, London. He is survived by his wife, Margaret Cool Jewitt; a son, Joel and his wife, Chris, of Redwood City, Calif.; a daughter, Andrea Comstock and her husband, Seth, of Key West, Fla.; and one grandson. A memorial service took place yesterday at Crosslands and interment was in Oaklawn Cemetery. Arrangements were handled by the Kuzo & Gofus Funeral Home Ltd. of Kennett Square.
