Bertram L. O'Neill, 80, who sold his partnership in an insurance firm to pursue a wide range of interests and philanthropic pursuits, died Sunday of emphysema at his home in Chestnut Hill.
Mr. O'Neill had been a resident of Chestnut Hill for many years.
He was a philanthropist and patron of the arts, but he had a competitive side. Mr. O'Neill was a national doubles champion in court tennis, a game similar to lawn tennis but played on an enclosed court. Mr. O'Neill and partner William J. Clothier won the national senior doubles championship in 1973.
He grew up in Rydal and attended the Penn Charter School before going on to St. George's School in Newport, R.I. He earned a bachelor's degree in psychology from Princeton University in 1942.
Mr. O'Neill served in the Army during World War II and was recalled during the Korean War.
He worked in his father's insurance business before selling his interest in 1960, then pursued genealogy. He was a member of the Pennsylvania Genealogical Society.
Mr. O'Neill is survived by his wife of 31 years, Jane; a son, Bertram L. Jr.; stepsons Sydney Lea Jr. and John Lea; stepdaughters Jane Lea and Ellen Disston; a grandson; and 12 step-grandchildren.
Services will be at 3 p.m. tomorrow at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 22 E. Chestnut Hill Ave. Burial is private.
