Notes for Sarah Bacon EDGE

Sarah Edge Worth of Kendal at Longwood Sarah (Sally) Edge Worth, 93, died Wednesday, April 25, 2012 at Kendal at Longwood. She was the widow of Richard M. Worth, with whom she shared 59 years of marriage. Born and raised in Downingtown she was the daughter of the late Jacob Edge and Mildred Clarkson Foster. She attended Westtown School, Downingtown High School, and Bouve-Boston School of Physical Education and taught at the Great Barrington School for Girls in Massachusetts and the Kent School for Girls in Denver, Colo. She served with the American Red Cross's recreation program for wounded soldiers in China, Burma and India during WWII. On her return, she served three years as Executive Director of the Chester County Girl Scouts. Sally's life passion was to improve the quality of living for older people. As a member of the Religious Society of Friends she was a prime mover, along with her husband, in the formation of the original Kendal at Longwood that has ultimately grown to more than 10 Kendal Communities around the country. She served for many decades on the boards of Friends Hall, the Barclay Home, the Hickman, Barclay Friends, PYM's Committee on Aging and the Kendal/Crosslands Community Board from its inception. She was committed to the possibility that growing older could be a time of growth and joy when shared in community. She enjoyed her family, people, gardening, golf and reading. Sally is survived by her two children: Mildred Clarkson Worth (Lark) and Richard Merritt Worth, Jr. and was preceded in death by her daughter Anna Elizabeth Worth. She has six grandchildren: Robert Lawrence Bergman, Sarah Margaret Bergman, Clare Elizabeth Worth, Daniel Merritt Worth, Thomas Edge Worth, Eliza Chase Worth and three great grand children: Anna Frasier Bergman, Emma Zepher Bergman and Caroline Marie Worth. A memorial service in the manner of Friends will be held at Kendal at Longwood on Wednesday, May 2, 2012 at 11 a.m. A private family burial is planned.
