Pauline C. Hipple | Volunteer, 105

Pauline Culbertson Hipple, 105, of Media, a community volunteer who worked in her family's insurance business until her 80s, died of pneumonia Tuesday at Riddle Memorial Hospital in Media.

Mrs. Hipple graduated from Marple Newtown High School, where she was valedictorian. She worked as a secretary at Bond Baking Co. in Philadelphia before her marriage to Henry Hipple in 1926. She then managed his real estate and insurance office in Broomall.

After her husband died in 1958, their son-in-law, Bruce Fitz-Gerald, ran an insurance business from the office and she stayed on to work for him. When she moved from Broomall to Lima Estates in Media in the early 1980s, she continued to work in the office part time for several years. She drove until she was in her early 90s, her daughter, Miriam Fitz-Gerald, said.

Since 1921, Mrs. Hipple had been a member of Marple Presbyterian Church, where she was a deacon and elder. She was a former officer with the Women's Society of the Philadelphia Presbyterial and was a former member of the Broomall Volunteer Fire Company Auxiliary and the Marple Women's Club. The club organized a neighborhood lending library in the lobby of a local bank and later raised funds to build the Marple Township Library in Broomall in the 1950s.

Mrs. Hipple enjoyed needlecrafts, travel, and visits with family and friends. She was proud to have voted in every election since the 1920s, her daughter said.

In addition to her daughter, she is survived by seven grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. Daughter Doris Williams died in 1998.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. today at Marple Presbyterian Church, 105 N. Marple Rd., Broomall. Friends may call at 10 a.m. Burial will be the churchyard.
